Come and learn about how the smallest creatures on Earth are upending practices in gardening, agriculture and medicine. Learn about human and plant microbiomes and the role of living soil in keeping gardens, farms, and even our bodies humming along like they should.

David Montgomery is Professor of Geomorphology at UW, and he and his wife Anne garden in Seattle.
They are the authors of "The Hidden Half of Nature: The Microbial Roots of Life and Health.”

Bess Bronstein will show you how to prune a variety of common and not-so-common shrubs, including plants previously damaged by poor pruning or severe weather. Come learn the best pruning techniques to use in your own garden.

Learn how to get peak performance from the hydrangeas you grow or want to grow in your garden from the ever-expanding varieties available.  In this class you will learn the distinguishing traits between species, and how best to keep your hydrangeas beautiful with the proper care. Kit will provide guidance on growing conditions, bloom color and pruning options for the different species. Finally, Kit will demonstrate proper pruning techniques on several species that grow in the NPA Perennial Border at the Bellevue Botanical Garden. Bring your questions and be prepared to go outside in the second half of the class.

"Propagation and Forsyth Pot Workshop"
with Alison Johnson

We will begin with a Powerpoint presentation covering all the aspects of propagation, and then you will get a hands-on demonstration and experience making a Forsyth pot. Next, we will head to the garden to select fresh materials so you an practice taking soft wood, hard wood and heel cuttings and placing them in your pot. You'll get to take home your pot and cuttings. The fee includes all materials necessary to make your own propagation Forsyth pot. Address and directions will be sent to registrants before May 8.

"Irises for Everyone"

Learn about the many different irises available to gardeners today! After a short introductory session, we will spend time walking through the NPA Border observing irises for wet and dry situations, and learning how to cultivate, propagate, and care for these plants. There will be irises from the Border available for purchase at the end of the class.

"Hypertufa Containers Hands-on Workshop"
with Lisa McGregor

Lisa will start with a "how to" presentation and some ideas of what you can make out of hypertufa. Then it's time to get your hands dirty as you choose what to make. (We will not be planting up your new container at this event and Lisa will explain why!) Fee includes all the materials needed to make a hypertufa pot for you to take home, and a handout on after-care and planting.

"Winter Flowering Perennials"

How do you create winter interest in your garden when all the leaves have fallen and the branches are bare? This class will show you the plants that create winter pizzazz in Pacific Northwest gardens. In addition, Trevor will demonstrate how to plant a winter container featuring plants from the talk, including winter-flowering and non-flowering perennials.

Trevor Cameron of Sunnyside Nursery in Marysville is also President and General Manager of the Everett Arboretum.
